HOW TO USE

  • Usage
Properly prepared durable texture or plain interior ceiling surfaces including previously painted and properly primed plaster, wallboard, sheetrock and acoustical tile. See surface preparation for "blown-on" soft-fibered ceiling surfaces.
  • Prep
Thoroughly clean the surface and allow to dry. Remove wallpaper and loose, peeling paint. Remove gloss from shiny surfaces. Patch cracks and spot prime. Use Valspar Bonding Primer Sealer to seal waterstained areas or stains from smoking.
  • Application
Stir paint thoroughly. Intermix containers to ensure uniform color. Apply with a premium-quality roller, polyester brush or airless sprayer. Paint the ceiling, rolling from dry area into wet area using firm, crisscross strokes. Finish with long, even strokes in one direction. At first, the paint will be a light purple color allowing you to see where you have painted. The purple will disappear as the paint dries, being replaced by the customary white color.
  • Dry Time
    Dry Time @ 77 °F and 50 % Relative Humidity
To The Touch: 30 minute - 60 minute
    Recoat: 2 hour

Vendor: Old Masters
Type:
Price: 22.99 - 27.99 (12 variants)

Old MastersGel Stain is a highly pigmented, oil-based stain designed to achieve intense colors on interior and exterior wood, fiberglass, primed metal, and composition surfaces. Its thick formula allows easy application and superior color control, necessary to achieve a rich and uniform color on most surfaces in a single application.

Gel Stain isespecially recommended for woods such as pine, birch, maple, poplar, and cherry. Gel Stain is excellent for vertical surfaces.

Where to Use
Gel Stain is specifically formulated for use on nonporous surfaces such as fiberglass, primed metal, and composition surfaces and is also suitable for wood applications. Especially recommended for woods such as pine, birch, maple, poplar, and cherry. Excellent for vertical surfaces. For outdoor use when topcoated with a protective exterior clear finish.

Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dirt, wax, grease, glue, and other contaminants or penetration and adhesion will be affected. Wood surfaces must be sanded smooth. Remove dust with a tack rag or a lint-free cloth dampened with mineral spirits. Surface defects should be repaired with an appropriate patching material.

Application
Stain application varies based on surface material. Please see application instructions below.

Application on Bare Wood:Apply stain liberally with brush or soft rag and remove excess, wiping in the direction of the grain. For a darker color, re-stain when first coat is dry. For a lighter color, wipe with a rag dampened with paint thinner before stain has dried.

Application on Fiberglass & Composition Surfaces:Stain one section or panel at a time. Apply a liberal coat of Gel Stain with a firm synthetic brush or lint-free rag and work the stain across and into the grain uniformly, feathering out streaks while the stain is wet. Wipe brush often on a lint-free rag to remove excess stain.

Application over Painted Surfaces:To create a simulated wood look, apply stain to painted surface with foam or bristle brush or cheesecloth using long, smooth strokes. Realistic woodgrain patterns can be created by using the Old MastersWood Graining Tool, as illustrated in the Old MastersWood Graining Booklet.

Application over Previously Finished Surfaces:Scuff sand surface before application. Remove dust. Apply a liberal coat of Gel Stain with a firm synthetic brush or lint-free rag and work the stain across and into the grain uniformly, feathering out streaks while stain is wet. Wipe brush often on a lint-free rag to remove excess stain.

If applying stain exteriorly, top coating with an exterior clear finish is strongly recommended.

Mixing and Tinting
Custom colors can be achieved by intermixing colors or by adding up to 10 ounces of universal or industrial colorant per gallon. The amount of colorant added may affect its performance and extend dry time. To lighten Gel Stain, mix any proportion with Natural Gel Stain. Stir for uniform consistency. DO NOT THIN.

Coverage:
Approximately 1,000 to 1,200 square feet per gallon. If the wood is finely sanded or nonporous, coverage is approximately 800 to 1,600 square feet per gallon. If the surface is porous, coverage is approximately 300 to 500 square feet per gallon. Coverage will vary significantly depending on application method and condition of wood.

Drying Time
Approximately 6 to 8 hours depending upon temperature, humidity, air movement, and the amount of stain on the surface. For additional color depth, a second coat of stain can be applied after 8 hours. Ideal drying conditions recommended are 70° to 75°F and 35 to 50% humidity.
** Due to the nature and depth of color for the stain color Carbon Black, the minimum dry time is 24 hours. Dry time may also be extended due to excess stain application or lack of stain penetration.

Cleanup
Using a cleaning solvent, such as paint thinner or mineral spirits, is recommended for cleanup. The use of paint thinners or mineral spirits may violate VOC compliancy in your area. Check with your local government agencies to ensure proper compliancy.

DANGER: Rags, steel wool, sanding residue, and other wastes used or soaked with this product may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. No ignition source is required for these wastes to start on fire by themselves. Immediately place rags, steel wool, sanding residue, and other wastes used or soaked with this product in a sealed, water-filled metal container. Dispose of in accordance with local fire regulations.

Recommended Finish Coat
We recommend Old Mastersclear finishes. However, this stain can be top coated with most clears. If a lacquer topcoat is desired, test for compatibility before using. For exterior use, we suggest Old MastersAscend Exterior®or Old MastersSpar-Marine Varnish. When applying water-based finishes, allow a minimum of 24 hours before top coating.

MAX VOC: 550 grams/liter (4.6 lbs/gal)

Vendor: Old Masters
Type:
Price: 67.99 - 78.95 (3 variants)

Masters Armor Interior Water-Based Clear Finish will provide a beautiful clear finish using cutting-edge technology. This product will enhance your wood project by being easy to apply and fast drying while providingexcellent clarityand superior durability. Masters Armor can be used on floors, cabinets, furniture, or almost any type of woodwork. Available in flat, satin, semi-gloss and gloss sheens.

Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dirt, wax, grease, glue, and other contaminants or penetration and adhesion will be affected. DO NOT use over shellac, lacquer, filler, stains, or sealers containing stearates. After sanding, remove sanding dust with vacuum or damp cloth. DO NOT use a tack rag to remove dust, as it may leave a residue that will interfere with adhesion.

New Wood:Sand surface thoroughly with medium grit sandpaper and progress to fine grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the woodgrain. Do not use steel wool.

Previously Finished Surfaces:Surface should be sanded to remove imperfections and gloss, using extra fine sandpaper (220 grit) and bysanding with the grain. Do not use steel wool.

Stained Surfaces:Stain must be thoroughly dry before applying clear finish. Allow oil-based stain to dry a minimum of 48 hours in good drying conditions before top coating. Do not sand uncoated stained surface.

Floors:For added protection, chemical resistance, and superior durability, we recommend mixing Masters Armor Part B Hardener (sold separately). Add the entire Part B four ounce container to one gallon of Masters Armor and stir thoroughly before use.

WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.

Application
Stir thoroughly before and during application. DO NOT SHAKE. Test the finish on an inconspicuous area to ensure adequate adhesion. Masters Armor appears milky in the can but dries clear. Do not apply in direct sunlight or areas of extreme air movement. Masters Armor is an excellent self-sealing clear finish. Do not use a sanding sealer prior to Masters Armor application.

  1. Apply with a synthetic fiber brush, foam brush, flat pad, or sprayer. A lambswool applicator may be used for large, flat areas.
  2. Apply in full, even coats in the direction of the grain. If brushing, apply liberally and keep a wet edge, working quickly to ensure an even coat. Apply with care to prevent bubbles in the finish.
  3. Allow one to two hours before recoating. Sand lightly between coats with fine sandpaper (220 grit) to produce a finer finish. If sandpaper gums up, allow more drying time. Remove sanding dust.
  4. Reapply. Three coats are recommended for greatest durability.

Please note:Testing is very important when applying this product over paints or stains because the appearance of these products may change when a water-based finish is applied. This product gives a soft wood amber that ONLY becomes noticeable when applied over white or pastel paints and stains.

Thinning
Thinning is not recommended, but if necessary, a small amount of water may be added. For spray applications, up to eight ounces or half pint may be used if needed.

Coverage
At recommended dry mil film thickness of one to two mils, coverage will be approximately 300 to 400 square feet per gallon. Coverage will vary significantly depending on application method and condition of wood.

Drying Time
Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 60° and 90°F and humidity is between 30% and 70%. At 50% relative humidity and 70°F, Masters Armor will dry to touch within 30 minutes and will be ready to recoat after one to two hours. Drying time will be affected by temperature, humidity, and film thickness.

Wait 24 hours before subjecting surfaces to light use. Care should be used during the first week after application as the finish is curing to its ultimate hardness. Protect product from freezing prior to and during application.

Clean Up:Wash brushes and equipment in warm, soapy water. Rinse clean.

Max VOC:Does not exceed 110 g/L (not activated).

Max VOC:Does not exceed107 g/L (activated) when mixed with optional Part B Hardener.

Vendor: Old Masters
Type:
Price: 11.99 - 24.99 (25 variants)

This is a cutting edge, robust, interior oil-based stain. Its thick, rich formula allows for easy application and superior color control, which is necessary to achieve a rich and uniform color on most surfaces in a single application.

Wiping Stain can be used on a variety of surfaces, including unfinished wood, previously finished surfaces, fiberglass, metal, and composition surfaces. Especially recommended for woods such as pine, birch, maple, poplar, and cherry.

Where to Use
Wiping Stain can be used on a variety of surfaces, including unfinished wood, previously finished surfaces, fiberglass, coatedmetal, and composition surfaces. Especially recommended for woods such as pine, birch, maple, poplar, and cherry.

Ideal for difficult-to-stain woods such as pine, poplar, maple, plywood, and veneers.

Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dirt, wax, grease, glue, and other contaminants or penetration and adhesion will be affected. Wood surfaces must be sanded smooth. Remove dust with a tack rag or a lint-free cloth dampened with mineral spirits. Surface defects should be repaired with an appropriate patching material.

Application
Stir thoroughly before and during application for even distribution of color. Stain application varies based on surface material. Always test stain in an inconspicuous area.

Application on Bare Wood (used as a stain):Color of stain will vary depending on wood type and porosity and method of application. After cleaning wood surface, sand with #120 or #180 sandpaper until smooth. Remove sanding dust. Apply stain liberally with brush, lint-free cloth, or spray until surface is completely wet. Allow to penetrate for 5 to 15 minutes. Wipe with a soft cloth, first across the grain, then with the grain. For a darker color, re-stain when first coat is dry. For a lighter color, wipe with a cloth dampened with paint thinner before the stain has dried.

Application on Fiberglass & Composition Surfaces:Stain one section or panel at a time. Apply a liberal coat of Wiping Stain with a firm synthetic brush or lint-free rag and work the stain across and into the grain uniformly, feathering out streaks while stain is wet. Wipe brush often on a lint-free rag to remove excess stain.

Application over Painted Surfaces (used as a glaze):Apply to thoroughly dry paint with cheesecloth or brush, using long, smooth strokes for simulated woodgraining, or blend gently from edges for other effects. Allow the stain to set up for approximately 5 to 10 minutes, then dry brush to subdue or blend. Allow stain to dry thoroughly (usually 12 hours or longer, depending on humidity and drying conditions). We do not recommend a lacquer-type finish over a glaze application.

Application over Previously Finished Surfaces:Lightly sand surface with very fine grit sandpaper or #0000 steel wool. Remove dust with a lint-free cloth or tack rag. With a foam or bristle brush, apply a thin uniform coat of Wiping Stain. Using a soft, dry bristle brush, make light, even strokes in the direction of the grain while allowing the grain pattern beneath the surface to show through. Continue to lightly brush the surface until the pattern is consistent and then allow the stain to dry. If you need to darken the color, apply an additional coat of stain in the same manner as the first coat. Allow stain to dry thoroughly (usually 12 hours or longer, depending on humidity and drying conditions).

Mixing and Tinting
You can achieve custom colors by intermixing Wiping Stain colors or by adding up to 10 ounces of universal or industrial colorant per gallon. Create Santa Fe pastel colors by tinting Pickling White Wiping Stain (formulas available upon request). Natural Tint Base Wiping Stain may be used to lighten a Wiping Stain color in any proportion or as a tint base for ultimate color selection. The amount of colorant added may affect its performance and extend the dry time.DO NOT THIN.

Coverage:
Approximately 500 square feet per gallon. Spreading rate will vary significantly depending on application method and condition of wood.

Drying Time
Approximately 10 hours, depending on humidity, temperature, and air movement. Dry times may also be extended due to excess stain application or lack of stain penetration. Wiping Stain can be topcoated after 12 hours, but stain must be thoroughly dry. When used on hardwood floors, allow 24 hours or longer depending on surface and drying conditions.

For exterior use, we suggest Old Masters Spar-Marine Varnish or Old Masters Ascend Exterior. When applying water-based finishes, allow a minimum of 24 hours before top coating.

MAX VOC: 250 grams/liter (2 lbs/gal)

Pickling White
Old Masters Wiping Stain is also offered in a unique pickling white formula. Pickling white creates a classic, white washed appearance on wood. Contemporary, southwestern colors can be achieved using Old Masters Pickling White as a tint base. Santa Fe tint formulas are available upon request. Please use the following instructions for mixing and tinting. Please follow all other instructions listed above.

Mixing and Tinting
Create Santa Fe pastel colors by tinting Pickling White Wiping Stain with up to 2.5 ounces of colorant per quart. The amount of colorant added may affect its performance and extend the dry time. DO NOT THIN.

MAX VOC: 550 grams/liter (4.6 lbs/gal)

Fast Dry Stain is recommended for use on interior wood surfaces or surfaces on which the previous finish has been removed. This stain is preferred for hardwoods, such as oak, ash, walnut, and mahogany.

Directions

Where to Use
Experience optimal results on all interior wood surfaces, such as cabinets, doors, floors, furniture, and woodwork.

Surface Preparation
The wood surface must be clean, dry, and free from dirt, wax, or grease. Sand the wood thoroughly -first with medium grit sandpaper, then progressing to a fine grit paper. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain. Sand smooth, then remove dust particles with a lint-free rag or a tack rag. If staining previously finished surfaces, first restore the surface to bare wood by completely removing the old finish, then follow the surface preparation directions listed above.

Application
Stir well before and during use. Stain may be brushed, sprayed, or wiped onto the surface. Before the stain dries, wipe off excess stain with a soft cloth. Allow stain to dry thoroughly before applying topcoat.

Natural/Tint Base Fast Dry Wood Stain may be used to lighten a Fast Dry Wood Stain color in any proportion or as a tint base to which colorant may be added for ultimate color selection. Coverage:
Approximately 500 square feet per gallon. Spreading rate will vary significantly depending on application method and condition of wood.

Drying Time:
Oil-based finishes may be applied 30 minutes after wiping. Dry times may be extended due to humidity, low temperature, lack of air movement, excess stain application, or lack of penetration.
